Ayurvedic Body Constitution- Three types of Doshas

The 5,000 years old science on healthy living, balanced body & mind is still helping people from all over the world to meet their health needs and lead a good life. With a view to overcome the ailments, diseases and irregularity of the system, the monks from previous eras developed ways to identify different body types and treat them accordingly to help them live longer with more youth and vigor.This age old information has helped yogis maintain good health even during fasting conditions and other dire times.

Ayurveda differs from modern medicine to a great extent because here the body’s are recognized on the basis of three doshas: Vata (air), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (earth) and the medicines, food and water etc. are provided to a person depending on their body type. The herbal form of medicinelargelyemphasizes on the food a person eats, as just by consuming right and according to the bodily needs much can be achieved with a healthy body and a restful mind.

Doshas are basically made up of energies that rule a person’s physical, mental &emotional state of mind at all times. But these doshas are not compartmentalized. They overlap each other in a person’s body but usually one dosha is predominant while the other two exists in lesser percentage. When yoga is combined with Ayurveda and a practitioner follows diet & conduct as per his/herdosha, the result of yogic practice increases by manifolds. Element:A combination of air and space

Characteristics: Vata body types usually have a smaller frame with a thin and petite structure. There hair are usually dry, rough and lacks luster with dry & patchy skin. The skin faces further dryness in winters and with improper care cracks are visible on the skin.  Coming to their basic nature, people with Vatadosha have a tendency to panic easily and blame themselves. They are heavy thinkers and usually have shallow sleep with large number of dreams. They are non punctual, usually late and are often talkative with a fast pace way of speaking.

Imbalance diseases: An imbalance in Vatadosha can gave rise to diseases related to dryness of the skin and body. Constipation, gastric trouble and irregular bowel movement are a direct impact of an imbalanced Vatadosha. Women with Vatadosha face scanty flow during mensuration or lesser days of flow with pain and cramps. Also, joint ache, brittle nails, fragile bones and cracking sound in the bones are yet another common issue.

Pitta Dosha

Element:A combination of fire and water

Characteristics: A medium frame with medium height and weight, Pitta predominant body types usually have brown or red hair with fiery eyes and redness of the skin with a fair complexion. Their skin is soft and the body is usually warm and due to excessive heat in the body, they prefer cold temperatures. Talking about their nature, they are easily irritable and lack patience but are also great leaders. There sex drive is strong and they have a tendency to have a quick sound sleep. With a large appetite their body demands a lot of food because of a fast metabolism but they gain and lose weight easily. Women have balanced mensuration cycle with less or no pain.

Imbalance diseases: People with pitta dosha have a tendency to get suntan easily and their skin burns very easily as well from sun exposure. They have rashes and inflammations quickly. With a tendency to eat spicy food, they can face issues like acidity, heartburn, nausea and skin diseases. Also imbalance can lead to excessive anger issues, argumentative behavior and hot headiness. Other issues are: migraine, acne, diarrhea etc.



Element:A combination of water and earth

Characteristics: A larger frame, people with KaphaDosha have broad shoulders and a broad body type. With a lustrous skin, they have smooth and glowing face with glowing skin all over the body with no or minimal skin diseases. Hair is strong, long and thick with black or brown eyes. Large eyes, mouth and teeth, they have beautiful features on the whole. Nature wise they are sweet, caring, patient and very friendly. Care givers and motherly in nature, they are sensitive and humble and usually have a great family life. With a slow digestion, they have healthy bowel movement and women have regular, pain free and healthy mensuration cycles.

Imbalance diseases: With a rather larger frame, Kapha body types usually are obese and gain weight very easily and face difficulty in losing it. Lethargic in nature, an imbalance in dosha can make one neglect work or procrastinate things. Cough related issues with cold and sinuses with nasal blockages and allergies are common. Depression, asthma, fixation over things is some of the traits of imbalance of this dosha type.

Based on the characteristics mentioned above, one can understand their body constitution. Once you know which dosha is predominant in your system, you can make necessary amends to live a healthy life free from all ailments and diseases.
